When is my Blitz appointment with my counselor?

All current 9th and 10th grade students will have short 1-on-1 meetings with their School Counselor, during their English class. 9th graders will meet the week of March 4th, 10th graders will meet the week of March 10th.

All 11th grade students will be automatically scheduled to meet with their School Counselor between March 16th and 27th. Their specific appointment time and day will appear on their Outlook calendar. Please accept the invitation for confirmation.

When do I need to finish registering for my classes in Synergy?

• Current 8th Graders: Due by March 8th

How do I know what my remaining graduation requirements are? My GPA? The number of credits I have earned.

Go to Student Vue and click on the "Course History". You can also go to Student Vue and click on "Documents" to see your transcript and Student Grad Requirement Profile.

What do I need to do for the Washington State History requirement?

Washington State History is a graduation requirement; it is often completed in middle school in the state of Washington schools.  You can check your recent transcript to see if you have met this requirement.  If not, your counselor will help you to either take an online class or a class at BHS. 

Do I have to take 4 semesters of Art and 4 semesters of World Language to graduate? 

To graduate, students must take a minimum of 2 semesters of art.  If they are not able to complete the remaining two semesters of art or the four semesters of World Language, they can work with their counselor to complete a Personal Pathway Waiver. 

How can I use a sport for PE credit?

You can use a sport for PE credit AFTER 9th grade. All 9th graders must take Foundations of Fitness for 1.0 credit (an entire year). You need an additional .5 of PE credit after 9th grade, which is usually done through one of our PE courses (Net and Wall Sports, Yoga, Weight Training, Recreational or Competitive Multiple Sports, Personal Fitness, Walking For Fitness). However, if would like to use a sport instead you may use either a school sport or an outside sport by documenting your hours (you must do 80 hours within 90 school -study fitness knowledge test through the district.
The sport and test must be completed within the same academic year summer hours will not count. Talk to your counselor to verify that your sport will be accepted (i.e.: gym visits and running clubs will not work). Please go to this website for more information.

Where can I do community service hours and how do I submit them?

Starting the summer after 8th grade you may begin accruing community service hours. You need 40 hours to graduate (please don't wait until senior year). Your community service hours must be done at a nonprofit such as Goodwill, Jubilee Reach, aquarium, Humane Society, etc., or a government institution such as a public library, school, etc. You may search for opportunities through x2Vol, https://www.volunteermatch.org/, our counseling website, and in the emails from Lisa Hansen, our BHS College & Career Advisor. Please verify with your service supervisor that the organization is a nonprofit (ex: teaching swim lessons at your local swim club will not count UNLESS the swim club is a nonprofit). Please get your supervisor's email (very important) before you are finished with your hours. Community service hours are submitted through x2Vol, which is hours, you will need to have an account in x2Vol. When you are entering your community service information you will be asked for a brief description, the name and email of your supervisor, the date and hours of your service, and a reflection on what you learned. If it is an ongoing commitment you can submit hours in bulk.

What is the High School & Beyond Plan?

The High School & Beyond Plan is a state graduation requirement that BSD meets through the activities and tasks that students complete in SchooLinks. These include but are not limited to career assessments, resume, college research, game plan, and more.  

A completed High School & Beyond Plan must be submitted at the end of each academic year. Students will not receive a BHS diploma if they are missing a completed High School & Beyond Plan. 

Since there is a difference between graduation requirements and college entrance requirements and I want to go to college, how do I know what I should take for college admission?

In the BSD Course Catalog and the registration slide decks, you will find information in multiple locations about the recommendations for what to take for college admission. In addition, students can reference individual college admission website. A good general response is that a student should sign up for as rigorous a program as they are capable of successfully completing.

Can I take less than 7 periods and request a late arrival/early dismissal?

If you are a junior or senior, you may request to have 1st or 7th period open without a class. You cannot have an open period in the middle of the day. All 9th and 10th graders must have 7 classes.

What if I don't submit my course requests by the deadline?

Your classes will be selected for you by your counselor based on what you need for graduation. It is very important for you to submit your course requests by the deadline!

If I want to take an Advanced Placement class, are there things I need to do in addition to adding the class to my course requests?

AP classes are rigorous classes and are a commitment. Please know that if you are placed in an AP class, you will be expected to remain in the class for the year. We always recommend that students consult with current teachers, guardians, and their counselor about course selection. We cannot accommodate requests to change out of AP classes at the beginning of year if you change your mind.

How many AP or rigorous classes should I take?

There is not one ideal number because every student is different. Remember balance is the key! Please talk to your teachers, parents, and school counselor to find the right course load for you each year.

A significant factor to consider is available time outside of school. Often AP courses involve more homework than other classes. A student should consider other activities they are involved in outside of school that would impact their ability to meet the expectations of AP classes.

What can I list for "course alternates"? Do I really need 3?

Any class that you would be okay taking in place of a 1st choice elective. These are used to fill a schedule when 1st choices don't work.

What are electives and how do I get them?

Any class that you take beyond the core requirements. Example: After taking 2 semesters of CTE, any other CTE courses will be considered general electives.

I didn't get my choice of electives, why not?

Students are not guaranteed their choice of electives. We make every effort to honor student requests and want students to have the opportunity to take their choice of electives at some point in their high school career. The most common reason a student may not get the requested elective is a scheduling conflict, where two or more classes a student wants are only offered at times that don't work with the rest of their schedule. This is more common for those electives and courses that are only offered once or twice a day (see the list below). Other reasons may include the following:

• Too few students requested the course, so it was not included in our master schedule.
• Missing pre-requisites.
• The class is full (this happens when a student requests an elective after the registration window has closed (The Friday before Spring Break).
• Classes only offered once or twice during the school day:
  • All AP Art Courses, Honors Acting, Radio Broadcasting, Digital Media Production 1&2, Coding in Python, Entrepreneurship, Special Topics Computer Science, Retail Management (DECCA), Baking/Pastry, Intro to Marketing, Journalism, Yearbook, Advanced Studies in English, Advanced Calculus, Intro to Data Sciences, Algebra I, All Music Classes, Yoga for Fitness, Basketball, Net & Wall Sports, Walking for Fitness, Weight Training, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C, Intro to Health Care, AVID, Washington State History, Race in the US, Sociology, All Special Education Classes, Most World Language Classes

How do I do Running Start?

Running Start is a program that allows students to take college courses during high school for dual credit - this means they get college and high school credit at the same time for the courses they take at the college.

Students can do Running Start in Junior and/or Senior year. BSD counselors host an information session every February about enrolling in Running Start the following year; students must attend this and/or an information session at the college they're planning to attend (usually Bellevue College or Lake Washington Tech), followed by a counselor meeting to discuss plans. Things to consider when looking at Running Start are: full time vs. part time, how much access a student wants to high school friends/sports/clubs, grades and ability to work independently, academic strength (i.e.: ability to do well in college courses without hurting GPA), attendance.

Some classes I took in Middle School give high school credit. How do I remove those grades/classes from my high school transcript?

The State of Washington has requested that all high school credit earned from a public school automatically be added to their high school transcript. If you do not want the grades/classes from your middle school to appear on your high school transcript, you will need to request that the School Registrar remove that information before the end of 11th grade.

You can request to have the grade changed to Pass/Fail, but keep the credit earned from the class. Or you can request to have the entire class removed from your transcript.

Complete the 2410P Exhibit J form and submit it to the School Registrar, Debra Andrews (andrewsd@bsd405.org).
